Opened Port But Still Closed
This is a free utility for remotely verifying if a port is open or closed. It is useful to users who wish to verify port forwarding and check to see if a server is running or a firewall or ISP is blocking certain ports.
More than 1 router. The most common problem I come across is people who are behind 2 or more. Port 25 is a special issue. It's commonly used as an open relay for mail, and most of the world's spam can be traced back to it, which is why it is very common for ISPs to block it (meaning, it blocks you from being a spammer, not from receiving it). The open port test in uTorrent doesn't work properly (they are working on it I believe) so you don't need to worry about it. If you have the green check in the bottom right hand side of the uTorrent window, you should be fine. After contacting game helpdesks I was told certain ports need to be open in order to ensure a smooth connection. So I set up a static IP and port forwarded from my router. However even after forwarding, some ports are still being shown as 'CLOSED' when testing. For example Call of Duty Black Ops requires 3074 TCP/UDP port open to play smoothly. I have checked (portchecker.co/check). The ports I opened previously are still showing as open, but the port I am forwarding them through (3389) is closed. I have tried turning off the firewalls at both ends without success, tried something suggested elsewhere (i.e open an additional rule set as 3389 - 3389, 3389 -3389).
Background
Port Forwarding
Winged warrior ii. Port forwarding or port mapping allows remote computers to connect to a specific computer or service on a private network. This allows you to run a web server, game server or a service of your choosing from behind a router.
In a typical network the router has the public IP address and computers/servers obtain a private IP address from the router that is not addressable from outside the network. When you forward a specific port on your router, you are telling your router where to direct traffic for that port. This utility can verify the success of that process.
Please refer to your routers manual or manufacturer for assistance in setting up port forwarding.
Blocked Ports
Most residential ISP's block ports to combat viruses and spam. The most commonly blocked ports are port 80 and port 25.
Port 80 is the default port for http traffic. With blocked port 80 you will need to run your web server on a non-standard port.
Port 25 is the default port for sending and receiving mail. ISPs block this port to reduce the amount of spam generated by worms on infected machines within their network.
